Commission a portrait

If possible, I prefer to meet someone before I paint their portrait. Ideally, this first session takes place in your home, office or other location you are familiar and feel comfortable in. At this time, we’ll discuss what you have in mind for the portrait and explore possibilities. It is also an invaluable opportunity for me to become acquainted with a sense of the person––their gestures and expressions, background, outlook on life——all of which are important when creating on canvas a true reflection of an individual. If appropriate, photographic reference material may be gathered at this time.

Reference Photography

When necessary, I will work from existing photographs, for example, for posthumous portraits, a surprise gift, or if you have a special photo of historical or personal significance that you want to base a painting on. Otherwise, I prefer to shoot my own reference photos as guided by my sensitivities as a painter. A photo session may be arranged at the location of your choice, with the understanding there may be additional charges for travel expenses to locations farther than 50 miles from my studio.

All photos are kept in strict confidence and are for my use only in creating the final painting. All reference materials supplied to the artist are handled with the utmost care and returned upon completion of the portrait.

Completing the portrait

Back in the studio, I prepare a preliminary study of the proposed portrait which is emailed to the client for review. With the client’s full approval, I begin the final painting. I use only the finest professional brushes, paints and materials to assure your portrait will be archival, museum quality. Completion of the portrait usually takes two weeks to two months depending on my studio schedule and the size and complexity of the painting.
