MAGIC COLOUR WORKSHOP
Paint:
Water mixable oil (Winsor & Newton Artisan)
• Phthalo Blue (Red Shade if available) or  Ultramarine Blue
• Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue (Arylide Yellow)
• Permanent Alizarin Crimson
• Phthalo Green (Blue Shade if available)
• Burnt Umber
• Titanium White

 

Medium:
• Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium (fast drying)
or
• Winsor & Newton Artisan Fast Drying Medium

 

*Note: While traditional oil or acrylic paint would probably suffice for the purpose of this seminar, I strongly suggest investing in these colours in water mixable oil. For those accustomed to water colour or acrylic, these paints are a natural transition to explore the wonderful versatility of oil painting. For those accustomed to tradition oils, these are well worth exploring particularly for plein air painting or if you or others in your home are susceptible to solvent fumes. 

 

Supports: 
• several 8” x 10” canvases, canvas paper,or  sketch pad suitable for mixed media for practice mixing a variety of colour swatches
• an 8” x 10” wooden panel, either primed with Acrylic Gesso or left natural. (If you haven’t tried these, wooden panels are a joy to paint on and were a favourite of the Group of 7.  Some fairly nice wooden panels are generally available for a few dollars at Dollarama)

 

Brushes: (synthetic, stiff bristles)
• flats/brights
• filberts
• small round

 

We’ll be painting fairly small panels, so you’ll want one larger 3/4” or 1” flat for laying in large areas, and a selection of smaller #2, #4 and #6 flats or filberts (1/8” to 1/2”) and possibly a nice “0” or “00” round with a good point for occasional fine detail. Traditionally with oil, stiff hog hair bristles are used, however these will soon get soggy and limp in water. With water mixable oils, stiff synthetic brushes as used with acrylic paints work best.

 

Palette for mixing colours:
• Plastic, glass, wood, or disposable sheets.
• old phone book

 

Palette knife
• 1” to 2” spade palette knife for mixing colours and applying paint

 

Additional:
• table top easel to support your work (if desired)
• drawing tools, pencils, eraser
• 12” ruler
• Prismacolor Dark Umber colouring pencil (not water soluble)
• masking tape
• 2 water containers (a 284ml and a 398ml can work fine and fit together nicely)
• palette cups (small container to hold medium)
• generous supply of rags and paper towels
• disposable baby wipes
• several grocery bags to dispose used rags and paper towels into
